Jija goes at it again in this action packed martial arts flick called ‘Raging Phoenix’. In Thailand, the trend of breakdancing has gone mainstream and most people view drinking as a favorite past time. This potent mix of Bboying (or should I say, Bgirl) with the art of getting drunk produces a unique new fighting style on screen to keep the audience captivated. And just like ‘Chocolate’, Jija delivers a superbly choreographed performance. Initially, the story may seem a bit odd to the Western eye. The notion of collecting the pheromones of innocent female victims seems bizarre and out of place. But again, what the movie lacks in sound script, it makes up in action. I’ve yet to see fight scenes of this magnitude made in the West. The producer is the same guy who directed ‘Ong Bak’, which explains the use of its signature Muay Boran elbows and knees. Although those unfamiliar with the ancient moves may have a tough time distinguishing the Muay Boran from Muay Thai, not to mention how it blends within the whole breakdance/capoeira infusion. If you watch closely and intently, you may, in fact, notice that the moves which do the most damage are those that highlight the old school elbows and knees, especially in the grand finale fight, where Jija reminds us of why she was cast for this role. More female representation is definitely a great way to demonstrate the power of Muay Boran. It’s a skill that has more elaborate moves than its modern counterpart, moves that are refined with a feminine approach.
