So you ask, who is the female version of Tony Jaa? The answer is simple if you had a chance to watch ‘Chocolate’, pronounced ‘Chocolat’ in Thailand. Watching this female action flick, you can’t help but wonder why the action scenes seem very familiar. That’s because the director of this movie is the same one who made Tony Jaa’s ‘Ong Bak’ and the female star, Jija, also trained in Muay Boran. Action movies made in Thailand are unlike those produced in the West. I mean, the real action movies have real talent when it comes to being able to do the stunts themselves. The movie ‘Chocolate’ is unique because it features ancient Muay Thai moves, similar to those found in Jaa’s performances. That’s why it doesn’t look like flashy kung fu or karate choreography that has saturated the market. Although, it’s still flashy to watch in a choreographed sense and a quick add on of Bruce Lee’s antics was added for flavor. The story is simple but the action is not. And just like ‘Ong Bak’ and ‘Tum Yum Goong’, stunts were performed without the use of wires (watch the end credits and you can see the stuntmen falling and hurting themselves). With Tony and Jija representing Muay Boran in a big way, the art of original Muay Thai is definitely here to stay!
