Have you ever wondered how kids get started in Muay Thai? Its no secret that most Muay Thai fighters came from poor families. These kids usually come from the provincial areas, where scouts from the city would search for prospective fighters they could recruit for their camps. Those who are chosen will eat, live, and train in these fighting camps to have a shot at winning big in one of the two famous stadiums, Rajadamnern or Lumpini. The prize money is worth it, for they would never make that much fighting in the countrysides. When asked why they do it, kids have similar things to say: “I don’t want to be a burden to my family. I want to make money to help my family. I want to save up and buy the things I like..” It’s no different than being a professional athlete in boxing. Fighting in Muay Thai is almost a right of passage from boyhood to adulthood for most impoverised Thais. Whether or not fighters make it to the big time depends on a number of factors including having a good training camp, good promoter, good attitude, good vibes with the crowd, and having good luck (at least according to Muay Thai experts themselves). One thing’s for sure, fighting in Muay Thai ain’t easy. Picture having those devastating kicks, sharp elbows, and powerful knees landing on you, round after round. In Muay Thai fights, there’s no escape from getting hit. Just ask some of the best fighters who ruled the sport. And that’s why you have to love what you do or get compensated well for doing it. What happens to fighters after they retire is a story for another day.
